Dr. Christina Raphaëlle Haldane (she/ her) is a weaver of "mighty artistic spells" (The WholeNote, Toronto) and her rich soprano voice and vibrant stage presence have resonated with audiences across three continents for over two decades. Her artistry has cultivated international recognition, establishing her as a sought-after opera singer, orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Haldane's performance experience informs her pedagogy, which is grounded on equity, empathy, collaboration, voice research and science, and student-centered goals. At MtA she teaches applied voice lessons and courses in the field of vocal studies.
Biography
Dr. Haldane's critically acclaimed portrayals of leading roles with prestigious opera houses - including The Finnish National Opera, The Royal Opera & Ballet Covent Garden, Scottish Opera, and Musica Viva Hong Kong - highlight her expertise in the realms of Handel's heroines, comedic bel canto, and contemporary opera. Beyond the operatic stage, Haldane finds joy in curating and performing recitals and chamber music, as well as frequently appearing as a soloist with leading orchestras. Artistic collaboration remains at the heart of her musical ethos, driving her vision to develop innovative interdisciplinary projects, new music creation, and unique performance experiences.
RECORDING ARTIST
As a renowned recording artist Haldane has released two albums, " ... let me explain" (Redshift Records 2019) a collection of Canadian art songs which explores folk, jazz, and avant-garde styles and "Tu me voyais" (Leaf Music 2022) a Francophone vocal album that celebrates her Acadian roots. Her forthcoming album "Visions" (Leaf Music, planned for release, October 2026) brings together prominent Canadian composers, creators, and performers in a dynamic recording project that celebrates music-making in the Atlantic region. Haldane's distinctive style, characterized by a captivating fusion of Western art music with elements of folk, pop, and jazz, lends itself to the creation of compelling new works for the soprano voice.
COLLABORATIONS
The essence of Haldane's artistic practice lies in the spirit of collaboration. Her affiliations with esteemed performing arts institutions in the Atlantic region, including Jeunesses Musicales in NB, Music NB, the East Coast Music Association, Musique sur mer en Acadie, the NB Contemporary Music Festival, Under the Spire, Été musical de Barachois, and Symphony New Brunswick, underscore her dedication to celebrating the region's vibrant artistic landscape. Beyond her performances, Haldane actively cultivates collaborations with fellow performers and creators. These partnerships have fostered a spirit of innovation and creativity, yielding unique and engaging artistic outputs. Her collaborations with Ventus Machina (woodwind quintette), Nadia Francavilla (violin), Carl Philippe Gionet (interdisciplinary artist), Stéphane Lévesque (film artist), Adam Cicchillitti (guitar), Jérôme Blais (composer), and Cecilia Livingston (composer), among others, have expanded the boundaries of traditional performance, giving rise to interdisciplinary arts projects that captivate and inspire.
OPERA ROLES & ORCHESTRAL WORKS
Haldane's operatic journey commenced with performances in the comedic bel canto tradition, notably with her debut in the iconic title role of Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment for Swansea City Opera's extensive tour of the UK, later reprised for Musica Viva Hong Kong. Within the bel canto repertoire, she has also interpreted Clorinda in Rossini's La Cenerentola for Iford Arts and Scottish Opera, and Adina in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore for Musica Viva Hong Kong.
Handel's heroines have granted Haldane significant vocal and dramatic opportunities, particularly in the roles written for the celebrated Italian diva Francesca Cuzzoni. Her portrayals include Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare for Finnish National Opera and the title role in Rodelinda for Opera in Concert Toronto, as well as curating a program of arias entitled "Capturing Cuzzoni" for Handel House in London, UK. Further Handel engagements have included Solomon's Queen in Solomon with Kraków's acclaimed baroque orchestra, Capella Cracoviensis.
Haldane has enjoyed a sustained relationship with the Royal Ballet & Opera Covent Garden. She performed the London premiere of Jonathan Dove's Minterne in the Crush Room recital space and the role of Rapunzel in their production of Sondheim's Into the Woods. As a cover artist for the Royal Ballet & Opera, she has been engaged as Fiorilla in Rossini's Il Turco in Italia, Sifare in Mozart's Mitridate, Nella in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and Silvia in Thomas Adès' opera The Exterminating Angel (also for the Salzburg Festival). Her performance of Silvia's aria was streamed to over 50,000 viewers in the Royal Ballet & Opera House Insights special on Adès' evocative opera.
For Toronto Operetta Theatre, Haldane created the role of Helen in the premiere performance of Michael Rose's musical opera A Northern Light's Dream, marking a significant contribution to the Canadian opera landscape. Other roles in Haldane's repertoire include Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (Cambridge Philharmonic), Vixen and Fox in Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen (Oundle International Festival and Longborough Festival Opera), Mercedes in Bizet's Carmen (Cambridge Philharmonic), Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème (Minack Theatre Cornwall), Lucinda in Mendelssohn's Die Hochzeit des Camacho (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and European Opera Centre), the title role in Handel's Alcina (Hampstead Garden Opera), and Second Niece in Britten's Peter Grimes (Cambridge Philharmonic). Haldane is an active performer of Oratorio and Orchestral pieces for soprano, and has been a soloist in works by Handel, Mozart, Bach, Rossini, Haydn, Mahler, Pergolesi, Buxtehude, and Mendelssohn.
ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP
Since August 2024, Haldane has served as Executive Director of the Sackville Festival of Early Music, furthering the festival's mandate to promote exceptional performances of and education in early European art music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. In this role she facilitates valuable connections between distinguished performers, scholars, youth, audience communities, and learners of all ages and backgrounds.
TEACHING & MENTORING
Appointed to the voice faculty at Mount Allison University's Department of Music in 2022, Haldane is dedicated to elevating and empowering the next generation of vocal performers. Her ethos of collaboration and connectivity fosters meaningful relationships with students, faculty, community partners, and music industry professionals, enabling an affirming voice community at Mount Allison to thrive. Her international profile as a leader, clinician, and adjudicator underscores her unwavering commitment to music.
AT HOME & BEYOND
Haldane's artistic lineage intricately weaves together British and Acadian cultural threads, enriching her perspectives and experiences. After a decade and a half of performing in London, UK, Christina relocated to her roots in New Brunswick, Canada in 2019. There, she dedicates herself to cultivating the region's artistic tapestry by integrating her global insights with local musicians, performing arts organizations, learners, and audiences.
She currently resides in Moncton with her partner Patrice Nicolas (musicologist) and their two diva-dog Pomeranians, Wally and Sissi.
Driven by a passion for continuous growth, Haldane remains a dedicated lifelong learner, mentor, and performing artist, constantly exploring fresh avenues for her musical expression and artistic vision.
